How to Prepare Your Government File in 10 Minutes from Home
Whether heading to the Civil Registry, Real Estate Notary, or Insurance Office — preparing at home is what separates a 30-minute trip from a two-day nightmare. This article teaches you to prepare a complete, organized file in just 10 minutes before you leave.
Step 1: Identify the exact service (1 minute)
Step 2: Gather the originals (3 minutes)
Pull out all the original documents you need from the drawer or family file. The most commonly required documents in most government transactions: valid national ID, mechanized birth certificate, recent utility bill (last 3 months), and rental or ownership contract. Put everything in one place in front of you.
Step 3: Make copies of everything (3 minutes)
The golden rule: 3 copies of every document. Even if the service only needs one copy, bring 3 in case the clerk asks for more or another window needs an additional copy. If you don't have a printer at home, most copy shops near government offices charge about 50 piasters per page. After photocopying, also photograph all documents on your phone as a digital backup.
Step 4: Prepare money and passport photos (2 minutes)
Know the required amount in advance from the service page on Madam Afaf and prepare exact change in cash. Add 200-300 EGP over the expected amount for any surprise expenses (stamps, extra forms, or photocopying). And if the service needs passport photos (like for ID or passport), prepare 6 photos 4×6 with a white background — that's enough for any application.
Step 5: Organize and arrange the file (1 minute)
Put all documents in a clear plastic folder or a cardboard folder with pockets. Arrange them in this order: personal ID on top, then birth certificate, then other documents, and photos at the end. This order makes dealing with the clerk faster and saves both your time and theirs. Write your name and phone number on the back of the folder in case it gets lost.
